Today, as Lisa and I were walking through Petco, we decided that it is time for Monkey (my ball python) to get an upgrade. He lives in a 55 gallon aquarium currently with some nice digs for him to crawl on and under. He seems pretty happy but we have a few issues.

First, Monkey is getting bigger and stronger. He is now able to lift the granite tile that I use to weight his screen top down. This is no good because we now have to pile a lot more stuff on the top of his home to prevent him from getting out.

Second, Monkey has a fountain that he loves to death but the fountain needs power. I cut a hole in the screen mesh to fit the plug through. Well last month Monkey tried to get out and cut himself pretty bad trying to squeeze his fat ass through the whole in the mesh. $200, 4 stitches, and a shot later we are re thinking this whole for his fountain.

Lastly, we want to give him a place to borrow so we are thinking of upgrading him from Astroturf to Desert Snow and we need to put some interior upgrades in place.

So, what I am going to do is build a sliding mesh top that locks so that we don’t need to use any heavy objects thereby increasing our access to him for handling. The top will have a cable access for his fountain and the thermostat probe as well as anything else we want to add in the future. I am going to get rid of his heating pad and upgrade to a true under tank heating solution that will have a digital controlled temperature regulator. His “toys” will be upgraded too.

I will be posting pictures and updates as I do the upgrade so everyone can see what I am doing and how everything is going.

I don’t know if it is the gash that he did to himself on his cage that I had to have stitched up three weeks ago, the $60 antibiotic shot that he got, or the fact that it is fasting season for ball pythons. I guess that I will have to throw the mouse back in the freezer and try again next week.
