Screenwriters on Strike (NY Times)

Unless you have been living under a rock and don’t watch/read the news, you know that the Screenwriter’s Guild is on strike and it is already affecting my T.V. watching! I know that I have read reports that Desperate Housewives and 24 have both stopped production because they ran out of scripts already. Family Guy closes production tomorrow The Daily Show with Jon Stewart is reported on hold and The Office stopped production because some cast members reportedly didn’t show up for work. Last night I noticed a lack of interesting things on the old boob-tube and I really think that networks are kinda just trying to save that stuff for when it gets really bad.

Now I am not opposed to the strike. I think the the Screenwriters have a valid reason to strike. In case you missed it, here is why they are striking. When a show is made the writers get paid for their script and a royalty every time said show is aired for the public on a network. However, if the show is bought on iTunes or something similar, the writers get nothing. Not a single red cent when the actors and studio/network that owns the episode get their same royalty scale! WTF?! The same thing goes for entire movies that are bought and sold on the mini-markets as well. So, if you don’t agree with their strike, your an asshole…or just plain an ass in my humble opinion.

What I am venting about is the fact that the networks and studios aren’t resolving the issue! This should have never gone to strike! What in the hell do the studios and networks think they are doing here? Do they honestly think that they can survive solely on reality shows until the screenwriters bend? HEY NETWORKS! WAKE UP! America is burning out on reality shows and this is just going to drive the final nail through that coffin! Come on Network and Studio Executives, share the wealth, instead of 3 Mercedes Benz’s can’t you just settle for 2 and let the screenwriters, who helped stuff that pocket of yours in the first place, get their hands in the cookie jar too. Even if it is just a pinkie finger…
